AB Mechanical  ventilation  utilizes  positive-pressure  devices  to  improve  oxygen  (O2)  and  carbon  dioxide  (CO2)  exchange.  There  are  two  main  goals  of  mechanical  ventilation:  (1)  maintain  appropriate  levels  of  arterial  O2  and  CO2;  and  (2)  reduce  the  patient’s  work  of  breathing.  Mechanical  ventilation  is  a  supportive  intervention  that  does  not  treat  the  underlying  disease  process.
