AB The  cerebral  metabolic  rate  of  O2  (CMRO2)  is  3–3.8  mL/100  mg/min.  Cerebral  metabolism  has  two  basic  components:  neuronal  activity  and  cellular  integrity.  The  brain  depends  on  aerobic  glucose  metabolism;  hence,  large  O2  demand  consumes  20%  of  total  body  O2  to  maintain  neuronal  activity  for  adenosine  triphosphate  (ATP)  generation.
