TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Chapter 37. Effect of Mechanical Ventilation on Gas Exchange A1 - Rodriguez-Roisin, Roberto A1 - Ferrer, Antoni A2 - Tobin, Martin J. Y1 - 2013 N1 - T2 - Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation, 3e AB - The major function of the lung is to exchange physiologic (respiratory) gases, namely oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Once the lungs fail as a gas exchanger, arterial hypoxemia, hypercapnia, or both appear and respiratory failure ensues. Arterial PO2 (PaO2) and () are the measurable end-point variables used routinely by clinicians to manage patients with acute respiratory failure. When the latter is severe, mechanical ventilation is then considered the final strategy for treating patients.
