TY - CHAP M1 - Book, Section TI - Diaphragmatic Hernia A1 - Ved, Sudha A2 - Freeman, Brian S. A2 - Berger, Jeffrey S. PY - 2016 T2 - Anesthesiology Core Review: Part Two Advanced Exam AB - Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) consists of a developmental defect of the diaphragm with herniation of the abdominal contents in the chest (Figure 138-1). It is a rare condition with an incidence of 1:2000 to 5000 live births with an estimated 1.5:1 male to female ratio. Most cases are isolated but may be associated with other congenital syndromes or chromosomal abnormalities. More than 95% of the defects are due to a defect in the posterolateral diaphragm (at the posterior foramen of Bochdalek) and 80% of these are left sided. Less commonly defects occur in the anterior midline (at the foramen of Morgagni) or in the crural diaphragm (i.e., paraesophageal). Complete diaphragmatic agenesis is rare.
